One-to-one or group sessions using relaxation techniques, and creative visualisation, to learn and promote relaxation and self-healing.
The use of meditation dates back to Ancient times. Over the years it has evolved into many different forms and has become a more structured practice. Professor Herbert Benson, M.D from the Harvard Medical School discovered that meditation counteracts the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, (the fight or flight response). During meditation the blood flow is directed to the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the brain that triggers relaxation, a slower pulse and energy conservation. Studies are still being conducted on the effects, and as more scientific knowledge is gathered, meditation will become a more accurately and frequently prescribed treatment. Meditation is the practice of deep concentration of the mind. Listening to music or taking a walk in the park can all be considered as forms of meditation. The type of meditation we teach at Number 11 is a mixture of the various Eastern & Western disciplines. For basic meditation for relaxation, we start with a relaxation exercise, then use a method to take us to a deeper state of relaxation/consciousness. Once in this deep state, we go on a short guided journey, such as to the sea or countryside. Through meditation we can bring the whole of our being into harmony and balance. The session can be used to view objectively, and bring healing to, any particular situation or difficulty we are facing. Regular relaxation and meditation helps to keep us centred and able to cope better with the changes and challenges of daily life.
